Infectious Disease Disinfection Strategies

Blog

Communicable diseases, such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) can spread rapidly within the workplace. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has approved many surface products that will effectively kill germs on contact. The following sanitation strategies can be used in settings where people congregate or spend a considerable amount of time each day.

Cleaning Products And Personal Protection Gear

Review the list of products that the EPA has deemed effective in reducing the spread of infectious diseases. Many common products, including bleach, are listed. Purchase spray cleaners, undiluted liquid products, diluted products, and granules that can be used to clean non-porous and porous surfaces within your facility.

Products should be used according to the instructions listed on them. A measuring device and a bucket should be furnished for products that need to be diluted. Personal protection gear should be worn while handling chemical agents. A disposable smock, gloves, and a face mask are some essentials that can be used for each cleaning session. Advise your personnel to never share their personal protective gear with others.

Products should never be combined together. A chemical reaction could occur if two highly potent products were mixed together. Skin burns, irritations, injury, or death could occur if products are not used in the manner that they are intended for.

Ventilation

Products that are contained within an aerosol can and some liquid agents that are rather harsh may release strong scents within your facility. Although your cleaning crew may be masked while cleaning, an effort should be made to increase the ventilation within your place of business. Opening windows or using an oscillating fan while cleaning will effectively aerate the premises. Cleaning should be conducted at night or in the morning. The cleaning schedule that you impose should not conflict with the hours that your business is open.

Waste Disposal And Single-Use Products

Cleaning your business each day is just one way to ensure that you are providing your patrons and employees with a safe setting to conduct business transactions. Waste disposal is just as important as using disinfectants. All waste should be bagged and removed from the premises on a consistent basis.

Create a checklist that outlines where indoor waste receptacles are located and assign someone to collect the trash and remove it outdoors each day. Furnish paper towels, moist towelettes, and other single-use products that your employees will require when using the restroom or after consuming food or beverages.
